Professor of Anthropology and Anatomy at Howard University

Director of the New York African Burial Ground Project


    Research Associate in Physical Anthropology for nine years at the
    National Museum of National History, Smithsonian Institution

    Visiting Professorships at Spelman College, the Universita di Roma “La Sapienza”,
    Columbia University, and Brown University

    President of the Association of Black Anthropologists from 1987 to 1989

    United States Representative to the Council of the 5th World Archaeological Congress in 1999

    Permanent Representative of the African Bureau of Educational Sciences based in Kinshasa

    Member of boards and panels of the American Anthropological Association

    His scholarly publications concern the history and philosophy of science, paleopathology, historical demography, medical anthropology, racism, museums, and anthropological ethics.

    His papers appear in such journals as the American Anthropologist, American Journal of Physical Anthropology, International Journal of Anthropology, and Critique of Anthropology.
